February 2008 - More Lessons from the Elders
The Village
Hello,

My mother suffers from Alzheimer's disease and for a while she didn't speak much. I think it's because she realized something was terribly wrong but was unable to form the words necessary to express it. So she said nothing. As her condition has worsened she has taken to speaking non-stop - not unlike any of her children, although more often than not her words don't make sense. But every once in a while she manages to nearly form a full sentence or spit out a word that will take me by surprise. For example I recently bought her a new night gown and she looked directly at me and said 'thank you,' even though the previous week she had casually introduced me to one of her nurses as her grandfather. So, as her illness progresses I try to listen to the emotion with which she speaks instead of the actual words.

Click here for more information about Alzheimer's and some of the challenges it presents.

Just recently I was telling one of my siblings about the night I was putting Mom to bed and, in her own way, she began to give me advice about life. Or maybe she was telling me about her own life. Either way, I am confident that what my mother, a village elder, shared with me that night will last me a lifetime.

Without complete sentences and only piecing together words and intonation (and let's be real - what I wanted to hear) she spoke of family; her children and her grandchildren, love and life and the choices she made.

I feel compelled to ask myself why do I feel these lessons are so important, now? My answer: Because time flies by. A dear friend recently reminded me that the older we get the faster it flies.

These lessons give me the opportunity to re-evaluate what is truly important to me and forego an overly analytical process. I have decided that with matters of the heart I am determined to be more forthright, with matters of the soul I will listen, with all the 'things' that mean something to me I will be more compassionate, more readily available emotionally. I am now more willing to act on what my acting coach used to say: Life is most truthful when you allow yourself to be in the moment.

My question for you is this: How do you get your life to the place you need it to be so that you can live in the moment?

My response: Start by clearing the clutter, physically and then emotionally.

Your Sanctuary
* HOME *
under sink organizer

Your home is your sanctuary -- it's where you go for solace, reprieve, and safe keeping.

If you find your home is not giving you what you need then it's up to you to create it. If you're not sure where to start here are a few suggestions, just short of saying "feel free to call us - we excel at helping people create their sanctuaries."

Take Stock: Room by room Start a fresh note book and visit each room for 3 minutes. Write down a few main points of what you want done in that room. Do this for each room - leaving space to add notes for each.

Review Your Notes: Each day over a one week period, review the notes you created . You will inevitably add to your list for each room.

Identify Time Required: At the beginning of the second week return to the first room and write down the amount of time you believe it will take you to complete the objectives of that room. Put a big circle around that time.

Schedule the Time: Open your day planner (whatever form it takes) and schedule a date with the appropriate amount of time.

Buy the Supplies: Carpenters' garbage bags (found at Home Depot), markers, tape, etc.

Be sure to have light snacks and refreshments handy so that you don't have to stop what you are doing for any long period of time.

You can do this!

If you are hesitant, feel free to give us a call. Our experts motivate you to completion, and in much less time that you could ever imagine. We recommend a 3 hour session in situations like this.

Your Money
* OFFICE *

Are you happy with your debt? Would you prefer to feel like you are managing your money instead of just paying the bills and hoping for the best? Do you feel like you should be further ahead of the financial game?

Kaos Group gives you the systems you need to get started, the care you need to keep you motivated, and effective operational systems for you to track all of the information you need to get you finishing rich.

A big portion of how we feel is rooted in our financial security. Becoming conscious of where our money goes is the first step.

If you would like to become more in-control of your money start by checking out this Daily Calculator. It appears that my 'little daily pleasures' are costing me 96K + in total dollars spent until retirement. If I gave them up I would save 282K+ !!

Now, anyone who knows me knows that I love my coffee, but I am also keenly aware that I can curb, curve, and bend how when and how I choose to spend my money on coffee - especially when I can easily calculate how much that will 'cost' me in retirement dollars.

Most important is getting your finances under control and we have a kAos Group expert to help you with that. We can start in EXCEL spread sheets and progress from there.

You'll be amazed!!!

Tax Time Made Easy
* SPIRIT *

It's time to get last years documents out of your filing cabinet, prep your tax information, and archive all pertinent paper work. If you are overwhelmed at the thought and not sure where to start just follow these directions and you will be well on your way.

1. Start with the right supplies. Hanging folders Sub folders Sharpie Marker - or better yet a label maker Bankers Boxes Tabs (3 inch are best because they allow you to generate labels with Avery 8366 labels if you choose to later on) - my suggestion is stick to one colour (for files and tabs) until your filing system is fully functional. Note - if you print your own labels you can create coloured labels.

2. Allocate 4 hours in your day planner for annual transitioning. This is cleaning up last year's files and inserting this year's. However, if this is your first time archiving allocate a little more time. (And remember, don't archive junk.)

3. Ensure that all receipts from the previous year have been categorized and tabulated for your accountant.

4. Label each hanging folder with category headings and put in a sub-folder with the same category heading and present year written on it. For example, my hanging folder tab says Dues and Subscriptions and the sub folder says Dues and Subscriptions 2007. This year's sub folder will say Dues and Subscriptions 2008.

5. Office Document headings will include: Bank Statement, Bank contract/communications, Business License, Government - GST, Government - PST, Tax Information, marketing, advertising, etc.

6. You are now ready to remove your 2007 expenses and move forward with your taxes.

Are you having an anxiety attack right about now? If you are then you should call us or email us - we help you prep your tax materials and set up an effective filing system to suit your specific needs. info@kaosgroup.com
